    Momentary letting go of attachment

    Hi everybody,

    I've been wanting to share this interesting moment I had a couple of months ago.

    Not that I do that well, but I am trying to limit unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. I am making a concerted effort to follow a proper path. Anyway, so I was in line to order a bagel on my way to work one morning. Somebody walked in behind me and my first impulse, as it often is, was to make a mental comment on some aspect of their appearance. Instead, I made the conscious decision to empty my mind of any thoughts like that. And a very curious thing happened: I felt a sense of relief. A very clear sense of an emotional lightening of my mind. It was a weight lifted. The weight of judgement of others.

    I'm curious if others have had this particular feeling along their journey. It was rather unexpected. A little bit of proof in the pudding, as it were. A fleeting glimpse of cessation.

    I don't know. I enjoyed it immensely, but it definitely sounded far more interesting in my head than it looks here on the screen. :-)

    Heya!
    I have a similar feeling in response to a practice I do. I call this practice of mine “let it”. When I have a string of thoughts, “what if this awful thing happens” I fullheartedly respond to them with “let it”. Its out of my control and kinda none of my business. It more sincere I am, the stronger the sense of relief. Follow those feelings.

        To "STOP" is the word of the Buddha... Sounds like a nice experience of stopping, Jenn. How was the bagel though?

              The longer I practice zen, the better I get at weeding my mental garden as it were. There are many times throughout my daily life, especially when I’m in nature, on a hike or similar, when my thoughts just kind of…float away. My mind opens up, the thoughts are no longer attached to my mind; I can best describe the feeling as “relief”.
