The 103rd of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    Gate One Hundred and three
Read the following, place it in your heart and sleep on it. Then, tomorrow, live it until evening when you can leave a brief comment on what you may have received during the process.

Accomplishment of the state of dhāranī* is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we hear the Dharma of all the buddhas and are able to receive and retain it.

A “Dharma Gate” is a teaching or practice that can lead to spiritual growth: some kind of positive outcome in terms of our practice. A way to approach the truth.

    Koans:
"The magical side of Buddhism is one of the tradition’s most closely guarded secrets. Not because it is hidden, but because western imperialistic tradition has shunned the ritual, sorcerous side of the Dharma in favor of a more rationalistic approach. And yet, like an unlaid ghost, the vast literary corpus known as Dharani sits, begging for study and practice.
In The Compassionate Sorcerer, the first on our series of Dharani Incantations, Lamas Dorje Sherab & Federico Andino walk you through an exciting area of Buddhist practice: the visualization and chanting of magic formulae called Dharanis. In a clear, easy to follow language they explain the classification of Dharanis in Buddhism. Talk about the main figure of this booklet, the Buddha Avalokiteshvara, Lord of Compassion, provides you with a new translation of the incantation called the 108 names of Lord Avalokiteshvara; and give you a ritual guideline for when and how to do the practice.
This new series throws open a door into a neglected but incredible treasury: the chests full of Dharani incantations that have been long ignored."

Thank you Shokai. I am admittedly undecided about the more mystical elements of Buddhism. I tend to treat them more as allegory than fact.

I must say that I am not sure about this one. Though when I think about it, reciting a mantra can be a meditation practice, and they don't always have an obvious meaning. Some traditions include recitation and/or visualization as a practice... I am able to see 'a state of dharani' as a form of actualized practice here, another way to focus the mind, like zazen - but like Tairin, I'm not quite into the 'magical' side of this.

I also have some resistance towards dharani, although some are very beautiful to hear been chanted. Like Ramone said, perhaps we can just chant them as a longer mantra or a nembutsu like practice.

These are practices you can try and I f you like them, include them in you practice but. don't forget that regular daily zazen is The Practice.
