The 72nd of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    The 72nd Gate:
Read the following, place it in your heart and sleep on it. Then, tomorrow, live it until evening when you can leave a brief comment on what you may have received during the process.

Entrustment as a part of the state of truth, is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] conduct is already managed. (Nishijima/Cross)

A “Dharma Gate” is a teaching or practice that can lead to spiritual growth: some kind of positive outcome in terms of our practice. A way to approach the truth.

    Koan:
Yunyan asked Daowu: “How does the Bodhisattva of Great Mercy use all those hands and eyes?
Daowu said, “It’s like reaching behind you for a pillow in the night.”
    Yunyan said, "I understand"
    “Really? What do you understand?"
“There are hands and eyes all over the body.”
Daowu said, “That’s nicely put, but it’s not the whole picture.”
Yunyan said, “How would you put it?
Daowu said “All through the body are hands and eyes.”

    Most note worthy replies:

Entrustment can lead to controlled behavior because it involves surrendering control or attachment to a certain outcome. When we entrust something or someone to the universe or a higher power, we release our need to control the situation and trust that things will work out as they should.

    Entrusting reality,
May we, together with all Buddhas,
    Act with compassion and loving-kindness
Letting go of our (perceived) need of control.

    Trust in the Dharma
    When all fades
    It alone remains

My wife and I had a conversation a few nights ago about the difference between planning for the future and having control of the outcomes. It is wise to make some plans for the future (retirement specifically in my case) but don’t get attached to the outcomes. There are too many variables and too much beyond our control. The future will be what it will be.
