    Hello Fiona,

If you read this thread from start to finish it should answer most of your questions:

Welcome to our re-opened Oryoki Practice Circle, to be guided by Shugen. Starting soon, folks interested in the art of formal Zen-style Meal Taking Ritual will gather to Practice in this area of our Treeleaf Forum. Shugen will be around here in the coming days with further information. Oryoki is the art of mindful eating

The first part of this thread shows how to put everything together and gives measurements for some of the more "unusual" components:

Hello all, Welcome to the Oryoki Practice Circle. I think the Upaya instructions there are a little different from the way we do it here. I suggest to follow Shugen's lead on this.

    Here it is ...

First, the following video will explain a bit about how to make and dance with a simple, home Oryoki kit. All you need is:

    1 - Clean Pillow Case
2 - Bowls and 1 Tea Cup (that fit into each other)
    1 - Cloth Napkin
    1 - Small Wiping Cloth
    1 - Table Spoon
1 - Tea Spoon or Chop Sticks
1 - Small Cut Piece of a New Sponge
    1 - Letter Envelope
1 - A small dish on the side for the "Hungry Ghosts"

Can I make my own little set of bowls and utensils, using tea towels etc? Or do I order a set of bowls somewhere maybe?

Somewhere there were instructions for a make-it-yourself set.... Perhaps in the Rohatsu instructions? I used 3 household bowls that fit into each other, a dishcloth, a pillowcase, a linen napkin, a spoon and a set of chopsticks, and a mini bowl-scraper. For Rohatsu, I set food and drink (such as a big bowl of a salad or a rice dish or a big container of yogurt, or a stack of bread squares) on a nearby folding snack table and served myself from each one in turn. I had hot cinnamon spiced tea in a thermos to clean the bowls.

Is there a video where I could see how it is done with food, when nobody is serving? Jundo's video was great, but when we do a life session we wouldn't have a person serving the food or bringing water to wash the bowls etc...

    Hello Fiona,

Yes of course, you can make your own bowls and there is no need to spend money on them. Jundo actually recommends just putting together a simple set that works for you. =)

As for videos, there are a lot of great videos that Shugen has done when we got together for Oryoki, but here is one with Jundo during Rohatsu 2015 where there is food.

    Hope this helps. =)
